Insurance Companies are largest investor in stock market during 2007-08
The insurance industry emerged as the largest investor in the stock market during 2007-08, surpassing FIIs, riding on the huge popularity of unit-linked insurance products (ULIPs), according to the Life Insurance Council, an apex organisation of all life insurance companies in India.
The council, in a briefing to the media here on Thursday, said the net investment by life insurance companies in equity markets during 2007-08 was Rs 55,000 crore against an investment of Rs 53,400 crore made by FIIs.
The investment by mutual funds in the same period was estimated at Rs 16,300 crore.
Referring to the popularity of ULIPs among investors, industry leaders said it was not that the insurance industry was promoting ULIPs, but it was customers who were preferring to invest in these products to help them participate in the stock market.
ULIP is a life insurance cover, in which the policy value at any time varies with the value of underlying asset at the time.
Life Insurance Council secretary general SB Mathur said the investment by insurance industry in the stock market in the first four months of this financial year was around Rs 25,000 crore.
During 2006-07, investment by insurance companies in equities was only Rs 20,000 crore. SBI Life Insurance Company managing director and CEO US Roy said it was for the first time that the investment by insurance companies in the stock market was higher than the foreign funds.
According to the council, 80% of life insurance business during the last financial year was received by way of ULIPs. Besides, an official said large investment made by the industry has helped the market to stabilise.
He said it was an international trend as more people are getting attracted to the markets. Although, investment by the industry in the markets is on the rise, it continues to be the major investor in government paper.
According to the council, investment by the industry in government securities during FY 2007 was Rs 2,75,000 crore while for FY 2008, the investment (provisional) was Rs 3,37,000 crore.
The council said the life insurance industry had assets under management worth Rs 8,47,000 crore as of March 31, 2008.

The “Mummy” franchise has always been the B-movie version of the “Indiana Jones” films, which themselves are B movies elevated by Steven Spielberg into an action-adventure colossus. So what does that make the “Mummy” films in the grand scheme of things? C movies?
The third installment, “Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,” directed by Rob Cohen (“XXX,” “The Fast and the Furious”), is by far the weakest. In it the excitement-starved husband-and-wife exploring team, Rick and Evelyn O’Connell (Brendan Fraser and Maria Bello, who replaces Rachel Weisz), come out of retirement in 1946 to travel to Shanghai, where they are tricked into helping resurrect an evil 2,000-year-old emperor (Jet Li). The emperor’s schemes to become immortal all those years ago were foiled when a benign sorceress (Michelle Yeoh) laid a curse on him. While in Shanghai, Rick and Evelyn run into their mischievous college dropout son, Alex (the charmless Luke Ford).
When the curse is accidentally lifted, the emperor, joined by a rebel Chinese army, rushes to the Himalayas, where a dip in a pool in Shangri-La promises immortality. He already has supernatural powers and likes to turn himself into a three-headed dragon. Accompanying the O’Connells is Evelyn’s eccentric, wisecracking brother Jonathan (John Hannah), who during the flight to the mountains is vomited on by a yak.
The kindest thing to be said for this frantic, cluttered mess of cheesy computer-generated action-adventure clichés is that at least you can see how the estimated $175 million budget (according to the Internet Movie Database) was spent. We get an avalanche, an army of bow-and-arrow-wielding skeletons, a car chase that turns into a fireworks explosion, and a cadre of snowy yetis. In the movie’s futile drive to conjure visceral excitement, the action sequences are edited into an incoherent jumble that makes you feel trapped on a rickety airplane sitting in a pool of yak vomit.
“The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). It has some strong language and mild violence.

Already declared a superhit in India, Abbas Tyrewala's directorial debut "Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na" is also raking in the riches in the overseas market, too.
The film's box-office collections from 40 locations abroad have stood at approximately $1.3 million (Rs.50 million) till Sunday, according to UTV, which has released the movie in foreign shores.
The movie, that launched Aamir Khan's nephew Imran, has particularly fared better in the Gulf regions and North America.
In the Gulf, it has collected $464,435 in 10 days while the box-office returns from North America total up to $440,717 till Sunday last. Released in six locations in Australia, "Jaane Tu..." has grossed $71,90 in 10 days.
The movie's 10-day collections from the rest of the world, that includes 13 locations, are $67,925.
Released July 4, "Jaane Tu... Ya Janne Na" had opened with a 100 percent collection across India and the domestic box-office collections have remained steady since then.
Also starring Genelia D'Souza and a host of other newcomers, the movie endearingly depicts the contemporary youth culture.

Aamir Khan's Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na has worked wonders at the box-office by registering 100 per cent collections in the six days after its release on Friday.
This is not surprising, because even before the release, the excitement generated by Jaane Tu...- the debut film of Aamir's nephew Imran - was phenomenal and bookings began five days before the release.
It is a feat no movie so far released this year - not even the previous hit Race - could accomplish at the box-office.
Generally, the box-office collections of an average-runner tend to drop after Monday, but the collections of Jaane Tu... have remained steady.
The exact up-to-date revenue from domestic and overseas markets is not available as yet. But judging from the box-office trend, it is roughly estimated that Jaane Tu... has crossed Rs 300 million mark by Wednesday.
Jaane Tu... is written and directed by Abbas Tyrewala. Aamir, who has co-produced it with his cousin Mansoor and PVR cinemas, invested Rs 300 million in the puppy love story.
As against the spectacular box-office performance of Jaane Tu..., the Harman Baweja-Priyanka Chopra starrer Love Story 2050 has fared miserably and its collections have already started to plummet.
According to trade reports, Love Story 2050 could generate barely 30 to 40 per cent collections in the opening week.
Till Monday, Love Story 2050 has collected only Rs 110 million from all-India box-office from 722 prints - more than double that of Jaane Tu...
Love Story 2050 seems to be a loser, considering the fact that it was made on a budget of Rs 500 million and also sold to the distributors at a higher price. But the revenue it has garnered at the box-office has remained below the mark and there is little chance of this going upward in next few days.
Jaane Tu... success can be attributed to Aamir's marketing plans. Instead of spending millions on production, he spent freely on promoting the movie.
And he has been rewarded handsomely for taking the right decision. He is now laughing all the way to the bank.

Mallika will be fifth actress to play legendary character of a Naagin
For the first time in the history of Indian cinema a Hollywood director will soon embark on a Bollywood film. Jennifer Lynch, daughter of four time Oscar nominee and two times Cannes Film Festival winner, David Lynch, is all set to shoot Hindi language Bollywood film. Interestingly her debut venture is about a subject that has always intrigued the west. The film is called Naagin-The Snake Woman and brings back to life the ancient myth concerning the Nag-Naagin relationship.
Lynch's last film Surveillance starring Bill Pullman and Julia Ormand was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May this year. And it is none other than Bollywood siren Mallika Sherawat who has been zeroed in on the title role of a Naagin. Mallika will be the fifth actress to play the legendary character of a Naagin. Vyjayantimala, Reena Roy, Sridevi and Manisha Koirala are the famous Bollywood actresses who had enacted this legendary character previously.
The film also stars Irrfan Khan in a role of a cop who has been given the task to pin down the Naagin and destroy her legendary powers. Hollywood's special effects wizard Robert Kurtzman has been roped in to create some unbelievable graphics for the film. Produced by Ratan Jain's Venus Records and Tapes, Naagin-The Snake Woman has Vikram Singh and Govind Menon as its co-producers.
The shooting starts in various locations and sets, in the last week of July, in a start to finish schedule. Casting is currently on for the rest of the parts in the film. Producer Ratan Jain is very upbeat about the development. Says he, "Venus films is known for its commercial family entertainers. There is lot of work happening between Hollywood and Bollywood and the film with Jennifer lynch starring Mallika Sherawat is a step towards it.
It was a wonderful experience working with Mallika Sherawat in Maan Gaye Mughall-e-Azam. And hence it was natural that we take it further. She is a thorough professional. And I hope that with this film, Venus Films will be associated with more International films in the near future.

One actor who is completely dependable is Shahrukh Khan. The moment the superstar learnt that Aziz Mirza wanted him to do the voiceover for Tips Films Kismat Konnection, Khan, who had just returned from the UK, not only instantly met the director but also completed the dubbing in a matter of few hours.
"Shahrukh is amazingly energetic," said Aziz Mirza. He added, "He had just returned from London. Any actor in his place would have made an excuse of jetlag and said "I want to go home." But not Shahrukh! His car took the road that led to the dubbing studio. That too at 1.30 in the night. He saw to it that he completes the voice over for my film that very night."
Interestingly it was Juhi who was to do the voice over initially. Aziz Mirza said, "Juhi plays a crystal ball reader in my film and since her character talks about life and relationships I thought she was apt to do the voiceover for the film. But Juhi felt that the content of my film was too strong and female's voice in the background would not be able to do justice to it."
Aziz Mirza said with Shahrukh now having lent his voice to the film, the circle was complete. "I am glad that Shahrukh is a part of my film. I can always depend on him. When I told him about the voice over he immediately agreed. Shahrukh did not question me even once about it."
