IndiaShining: Enough is enough: Nothing will change

So everyone said 'enough is enough'. First, they said it to the politicians. They said it in the media, and then to the media. Then they stopped saying it, and life is back to normal, or what passes for normalcy (given our daily national quota of mayhem). The media seems to have heard; the association formed by TV news channels has put out a code of conduct which is at least a beginning. But what of the politicians? Here's what. Maharashtra has a new state government which includes a minister widely believed to have links with the underworld.

IndiaShining: India cannot remain a global 'back office': PM

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday said India should not remain a 'back office' to provide R&D solutions to the world and asked scientists to do more to keep pace with China and Japan who have 'scored over' it in taking scientific and technological advances to the people. "We cannot be satisfied becoming a back office for providing research and development solutions for multinational companies," he told a gathering of top scientists in New Delhi. Singh gave away the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prizes, the country's highest science awards, for 2007 and 2008 to 21 young scientists. "China and Japan have scored over India in delivering to the people the benefits of scientific and technological advances," he said.

Movies: Dawood directly involved in Mumbai attacks: Russia

Underworld don Dawood Ibrahim [Images] was directly involved in the deadly 26/11 attacks in Mumbai and his clandestine drug trafficking network was used to finance the terror strikes in India's financial hub, a top Russian crime buster said on Thursday. "Gathered inputs testify that infamous regional drug baron Dawood Ibrahim had provided his logistics network for preparing and carrying out the Mumbai terror attacks [Images] by the militants," the director of Russia's [Images] federal anti-narcotics service, Viktor Ivanov, said. The Mumbai mayhem is a burning example of the use of illegal drug trafficking network for perpetrating terrorism, he said in an interview to the government daily 'Rossiskaya Gazeta'. "The super profits of the narco-mafia through Afghan heroin trafficking have become a powerful source of financing organised crime and terrorist networks destabilising the political systems, including in Central Asia and Caucasus," Ivanov said.

IndiaShining: I-T exemption on home loans may be doubled

The government is considering a proposal to double the income tax exemption limit on housing loans to Rs 3 lakh (Rs 300,000) from the current level of Rs 1.5 lakh (Rs 150,000), according to government sources. The proposal is being discussed by the committee of secretaries that was set up in the wake of the global financial crisis affecting the Indian economy. Industry lobby groups have been urging the government to raise the limit as it will reduce the cost of borrowing on home loans. "The logic behind the proposal is to boost consumption to drive domestic demand," said a top government official. A rise in income tax exemption means higher disposable incomes.

IndiaShining: Auto parts: 200,000 may lose job; 4,000 units face closure

India's auto component makers are facing one of the biggest crises ever. With the domestic market in the doldrums and the exports to the American market badly hit, many companies are on the verge of shutting down. The entire supply chain of auto companies is bearing the brunt of the economic meltdown. From Tier-1 companies to small-scale units, all are facing a huge fall in demand, delayed payments and a stiff liquidity crunch. "About 4,000 ancillary units are on the verge of closure and about 200,000 people will be affected by this crisis. Most companies have cut down the number of shifts, working days and are cutting down production. The US crisis has aggravated the problem," says Anil Bhardwaj, secretary general, Federation of Indian Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (FISME).

IndiaShining: Lower pay hikes seen for Indians in 2009

Anticipating a decline in its business performance in 2009, corporate India is likely to cut back on the planned salary increase in the coming year, even as most firms plan to avoid huge job cuts, a latest survey says. A majority of companies in the country are trying to be selective in planning the workforce, compensation and benefit cuts for 2009, while they anticipate a decline in business performance next year, according to global HR consultancy, Mercer. The survey revealed that 83 per cent companies expect salary increases in the coming year to be lower than originally planned by them. The responses indicate that the companies are planning to look closely at holding down the level of compensation increases in 2009. However, only 19 per cent of survey respondents are considering the more drastic step of freezing 2009 salaries at 2008 figures.
