About 30 percent of men and a little less than five percent of women consume alcohol in India, as most start drinking at the age of 20 years, the Lok Sabha was informed Wednesday.
Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Panabaka Lakshmi said the government is 'cognizant of the fact that consumption of alcohol in excessive amounts can lead to social, economic and health related problems'.
Quoting a study conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (Nimhans) for the World Health Organisation (WHO), which was published in 2006, she said the study showed that nearly 30 percent of adult men and less than five percent of women consume alcohol - giving a male to fe

@ankit, then the next news would be "99% percent of Ministers drink Alcohol" - Indian Men. :-).
It is useless for govt. to comment on this, as they have the power to ban the alcohol. This topic is another best one to comment on, for all rambhaiyyas.
@rsk4u....Ministers run this business through thier other family members.....I mean how can they stop tht ? wht sees govt is half glass empty ( 30 percent of men )so 70 % you can add more to this ...so the conclusion

I read in a newspaper that, there is a tiny place called Mahe, 60kms near Calicut, (This is an Union Territory). Its population is around 30000 only. Now, the statistics...
Per capita Alcohol consumption is 6.5 Full (650ml) per day. (including children and women) :-). Note: The actual reason is This is due to the floating population from outlying regions.
