Uttarayan is known as Makar Sakranti in other parts of India. It is celebrated across Gujarat, with major centers of kite-flying in Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Nadiad, among others. The International Kite Festival is always held at Ahmedabad on January 14, to coincide with the festival of Uttarayan or Makar Sankranti. This year, Tourism Corporation of Gujarat is planning to celebrate the 22th International Kite Festival 2012 from 9th to 11th January 2012 in which 34 countries of the world have participated. Every year a large number of foreign as well as Indian Kite Flyers participate the festival tour and make this festival a grand success.
