Hey jiggs since you brough this subject up, there is a lot of things unknown in India. I have seen and experienced myself the way doctors treat their patients. The level of awareness is very low in patients and consultants are able to do what they like. In US such things come to light because there is more awareness in the general population and they really get after the life of a doctor if he does something wrong, and people are aware that doctors can make mistakes. I have seen lots of such things in my life. There are lots of times people are advised surgery just for nothing. This is like the matrix - take the blue pill or the red pill. The blue pill makes you feel safe, but the red pill is the reality.

Yes well said johnnybravo…….over here since direct to consumer advertising of even prescription drugs is allowed, we have ppl coming to doctors asking for some medicine, and they force the doctor to prescribe it to them, because they are so convinced by the advertisement that it will help them. (at times there are better alternatives that doctors recommend, but they want this new drug that they see ad for on TV).. pretty stupid system. BIG PHARMA just goes after money here.

hey i think every thing has a side effect and especially drugs. even though it cures the body from diseases but if any overdose or any wrong intake can be fatal........
Yes denny ur right, but there are many medicines out there that do more harm then good. There are many cholesterol lowering drugs that have benefit ratio of 1 in 20, some even have 1 in 100, and some over 1 in 1000. yet these drugs get approved by FDA.
I am in the medicine field, and we also have to study drugs. I don’t know about India, but over here (CANADA/USA) pharmaceutical companies even make up disorders like rest-less leg syndrome and convince people that they need daily medicine for it.
Drug companies here invite doctors over for free lunches and give free samples of there drugs, free gifts for their office. They basically corrupt doctors into prescribing medicines that patients don’t even need. Also government organizations that approve new drugs, don’t even do their own research, they rely on research that drug developers do them self. That’s pretty stupid of our system since these drug companies main goal is to get there drug in market and make their profit. They spend billions of dollars in drug development, research, and advertisement. Think about their loss if that drug didn’t go into market after all that money spent.
Also u can go read about “me-too drugs”… most of these new medicines are same as something similar that came before. In the last 5 years only 3% of new drugs have made any new advancement in medicine. All the other new brands that come out monthly, are same formula just given new names.
Same is d case here in India. My uncle is on manager post of a major pharma company. So i know very well that how they r promoting their drugs in d market
Yup. It’s pretty bad. But I don’t think they allow direct to consumer advertising of prescription drugs in India. Do they?..(in US they do, which is even more stupid, it’s like making patients choose which medicine they want rather then the doctor)

as far as the drugs goes i think the scenario in india is much better than foreign countries. i think there is a strong check and the chances of malpractices are very less in the medical system at least......
