In Sacred Text - Shri Sai Satcharitra December 10, 1910 has been referred specifically. The reason given is "The night Arti at the Chavadi was started". The year 2009-10 marks start of 100th year of celebrations for this attire. Now, since we are heading to the same date, only difference is - it is after 100 years, it also marks a celebration on grand scale in Shirdi.
