सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने एक महत्वपूर्ण फैसले में कहा है कि दहेज हत्या के मामलों में दोषी व्यक्तियों को उम्र कैद की सजा सिर्फ दुर्लभ मामलों में ही मिलनी चाहिए। आईपीसी की धारा 304-बी के तहत दोषियों के लिए न्यूनतम सात साल से अधिकतम 10 साल तक की सजा का प्रावधान है।
