    Jigar,

Life as an intern is not that difficult? You get to learn quite a lot.

Yes.. We obviously get to learn a lot.. but life sure is difficult.. The bigger the hospital and the heavier the patient load, the murkier it gets.. and there is certainly no respect or appreciation..

Well, being a Dr is a thank less job. You save pt's lives, the salaries are low, you have to read a lot & struggle a lot.

If you were to put the same effort into something else, you will go places - but not in medicine.

My friend after MBBS used to get Rs. 2,500/- per month in Karnatka in his years of PG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guess, how much I pay my car driver and Maid in Delhi - Rs. 6,000/- per month each.

So there you go. Guess how much a UK intern gets paid - 1500 pounds per month x 75 = 1 lakh plus.

The politicians in India need to increase the salaries of all doctors to match the International remuneration.

That is my view point, anyway.

hey being an intern is the most difficult thing.... an done thing what i don't like is the employers feel as if we are some zombies or something and expect us to work like machines with no sense of appreciation or respect...

as far as the payment of the doctors is concerned, i think the interns should be given something at least and the lower staff should be given a higher salary also the starters should be paid more....

      Denny,

I am all for increasing the pay all across India and for all jobs to match inter-national standards. Why should an Indian get paid less for doing exactly the same job as one in USA/UK?

BUT in my view, doctors who put in 8 to 10 years of life to look after human's - should be paid more. Esp. when they are paid more in the developed world as compared to India.

What happens is this - you get a seat in medicine - the govt. spends like 10 lakhs(for eg) per candidate to do MBBS and as soon as they finish MBBS - they run to USA. This is brain drain for our country and brain gain for us/uk etc.

If we were to pay equivalent salaries all those brains will stay in India and help sick people.

This in my view is due to govt. apathy.

I agree doctors and surgeons should be paid well, but there are limitations of the economy. We are surviving/developing because we are cheaper yet than the developed world. In fact, soon enough you might see a wave of NRI surgeons coming back to India to earn more from Medical tourism back here. The doctors aren't paid that badly here, they enjoy premium lifestyle in India if they do a good job. There are far too many patients here and also far less awareness/legal redressal if you do something wrong. Its not just about the money, how much money does a doc need to live a decent lifestyle, the pockets would just never get filled however hard indian govt will try. At some level we, indians need to feel a moral responsibility towards our own.

I agree that we docs should remain in India.. But we don't have any option. The increase in the reservation quotas in PG seats has left us with no option. I don't have any grudge against any ST or SCs.. But i believe that merit should be the only criteria.. take my example.. I could not get admission to PG anywhere in India because almost 50% seats are taken away.. I know that i m better than any other doctor and USA appreciates my ability.. so I will go to USA.. The Indian government does not appreciate my abilities. so the docs are totally justified in going to USA... And this year itself, almost 95% of all the docs going to the US belong to the open category..

I totally agree with you jigar, that there are inefficiencies in our system. The indian govt does not appreciate your abilities but I'm sure indian people would appreciate if after earning your millions, instead of a mansion in new york you would open a hospital in your birthplace/hometown etc.

Most of the guys would think you are crazy :-) if you do that, because nobody really comes back to fix the system, inspite of being produced by the same system.

@ Garfield, Please do not mistake lining the pockets with quality of life. Every one needs a decent amount of money to have roti, kapra & makkaan. It just depends what your definition is of QoL?

What you call premium lifestyle, may be just below average in some countires.

@ Jigar, I agree with you totally and can empathise. The reservation system is just a mockery, with the creamy layer of SC/ST getting the best tutors for their children & coaching classes and then claim SC/St reservation.

My neighbour is an ST IAS officer, one day before retirement - the IT dept. raided his house to find 33 CRORES IN CASH, 27 apartments in Delhi etc etc.

His children went to the best schools with me, expensive tennis lessons, expensive clubs. is it right for them to avail of the SC/ST quota? That is what is happening about the reservation - it is getting abused.

Will the poor Sc/ST child get the benefit - no. is is worth having the reservation system where the rich SC/ST guys make use of the system - an emphatic & resounding NO!

Hi bikaner, im not averse to people living self defined high quality lives they desire and deserve, however in all societies where there are large inequities flashing wealth is definitely inviting trouble. When majority of India is still earning less than Rs 5000. If we have people zooming around in their Mercedes and customised jets and yachts, we are bound to see some trouble. Whether that the yachts are rightfully earned or not but it still affects the people below poverty line and especially classes like SC/ST who have not seen money in their family for decades. Why was this IAS officer receiving bribes, he had enough for a well defined lifestyle? Competition, deprivation for centuries those come to my mind. French revolution, Russian revolution and any revolution for that matter is brought on by huge inequities and an extravagant lifestyles of the rich. There should be more for people who are more responsible and smart in a society, but there should not be starvation and hunger for the weak and inefficient. Otherwise there will be the next revolution. Hence I agree with Indian govt. in not allowing huge salaries to govt. officials. Whether or not they are morally responsible and intelligent enough to live within their means is a secondary issue. We need to grow as a country and not as classes.

hey but Money is the prime motivation for majority of the people..... if we keep a healthy salary then there are chances that we would have less corruption and all that stuff.....

so a healthy salary is a must for the employees......

  • Avatar | written by garfield79 1206 days ago Rating: 0 | Rate comment: + -

As far as I know central govt employees have more than healthy salaries. Only grouse amongst them is that they are not paid as much as pvt sector. But with assured employment, why should they be paid any more unless they are producing enough revenue/profits to justify their salary. If you use such a yardstick on govt employees, many agencies would complain they are forced to give subsidies while others like oil sector are profitable just by the virtue of the commodity they are selling.

State govts. definitely need to do something for their employees. Some of the salaries in remote places are ridiculous or so I have heard. But State govts. will always crib about not receiving enough from the cente which is not entirely untrue. The problem is so deep rooted people, that it would take years to fix the system. Software engineers would know such systems :-) from their day to day experience.

There is no easy solution for this problem in my opinion. This one needs more than a night out :D

yes garfy bro the problem is very very deep and definitely needs lots of nights to be solved......

but it has to start somewhere or the other.....
