Before Britishers took over , India was land ruled by kings , sultans , nawaabs. Mughal were token rulers while Marathas had control over substantial part , then there was nizam in Hyderabad , Maharaja rangit singh's kingdom in punjab (which was last to fall to british , 10 years after deadth of maharaja rangit singh).
