Raj Thackeray used the media brilliantly throughout the week and the media, well, it will use anything. The Mumbai protests are a wonderful example of building a political brand. Deliver a fiery speech, rough up a few people before camera, get arrested for a while and voila! you are a political force. The media will do the rest. The many editorials on the subject were largely of the “don’t do this to Mumbai, it belongs to all of us” kind. Kumar Ketkar’s piece in The Indian Express was an exception, marrying sanity with insight.
