To truly appreciate it one must have gone through the experience before that. I am actually thinking of those people for whom it doesn't mean much still for a different reason.

We are, as a group, foremost involved in thoughts of short term personal benefit and nothing more. We rarely think about the importance of freedom and what implications it has had on our everday lives. Of course, we are sensible, aware and thoughtful enough to understand what freedom really means to us but someone has to initiate us to think along this line. So yes, for most of us, independence is a given and it is very difficult for us to appreciate freedom.
