Its sad that how the developed world thinks of us like a vast pool of resources to exploit. Indians have still to go a very long way before they stop sacrificing some basic human rights to feed their stomachs. I dont think government should try and ban this, atleast it provides some income to people with no money and atleast its better than prostitution of some crime.
There is nothing wrong with surrogacy, the Indian legal system actually supports surrogacy. Not only does the surrogate mother eligible for the medical costs but she can actually charge the couple for her "services" (this is unlike any other country).
However Zazi, your use of the term "outsourced" is really interesting here. It would be dreadful to see an organized industry around being a surrogate mother, with competing womb rentals and value added services from different vendors!

Yups I agree with you nameless wanderer...what makes me ponder is a doctor's comments in the article that people in the west might think that getting pregnant is not worth the trouble when you can have someone else carry the child with couples sperms and eggs!

@nameless wanderer - There is nothing wrong with surrogacy as a way out for childless couples, however there is something very wrong with the legal system if it becomes a commercial trade. Think of poor people bearing child after child to make money. Think of underage women getting pushed into the commercial practice. If its to be a trade, govt should properly isntitutionalise it, otherwise the mother offering the womb will be the biggest sufferers with xyz middlemen taking away the profit.
