The smuggling of Indian coins into neighbouring Bangladesh where they are melted down to make jewellery for higher returns has led to a shortage of coins in Kolkata, police said. The smuggling of copper and nickel coins with a face value of two and five rupees had prompted the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to order an investigation last month.
