Smoking a cigarette may now burn a hole in your pocket.
From October 2, smoking would be banned in all public places. Private offices and other establishments can no longer have designated rooms for puffing cigarettes. The ban also includes hotels and restaurants.
According to Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss, smokers will have to step outside into open space if they wish to smoke.
Though in the beginning, the fine would be only Rs 200, the government is trying to amend the act and in future the fine may go up to Rs 1,000.
Even the employer can be fined if somebody is found smoking within the office premises.

But i welcome this. the bribe will add to the cost of smoking.

Yes, however... this will make the policemen pocket big big, if they stand by canteens, toilets, colleges, schools.
Anbumani ramadoss, may consider some penalty for selling cigarette in public places like shops, restaurant, supermarkets and impose fine for ITC for manufacturing the tobacco and television for screening advt.

hey guys i think this law will be successful in the initial stages but once some time passes it wont be followed and ppl will continue their old habits...
the only place it will be followed a bit strictly is the corporate offices and BPOs, as they would be under special scanner and watch.....

Its like allowing the car manufacturers to make car that can go upto 250kms and banning the drivers to limit their speed to 50kms in National highways!
The Intelligent Governance, Brilliant Congress, Smart Man-Mohan Sing(h), adopted Sonia and foolish People.
And Smart Rambhaiyyas.............

The govt. shd increase the tax on cigarettes!
and fine shd be RS. 2,000/- at least - so that a smoker will have to pay at least Rs. 500/- in bribe! :-)

hey bikaner in this way u are gonna make sure that only corruption increases....as with such a huge fine no one is gonna pay the original fine and the cops will be happy with a 500 rs note.....
so i dont think increasing the fine would be a logical thing...
one thing that can be done is that the cops should be paid a particular amount for the number of perpetrators caught by them.....
in this way they will be motivated to go the legal way and hence the law will be imposed effectively.....

A question for all - why doesnt govt make it illegal to produce tobbacco in India or ban the sale of the same. Wht Ramadoss has done is just eyewash.

Absolutely, you are right j2iu,
Definitely, this Ban will have the positive impact on smoking and to the cops.
And garfield, as usual this is a political stunt as ITC is allowed to produce tobacco and the people should not use it publicly.

i agree with rsk and i think they just cant band the manufacturing as provides a lot of revenue to the govt...
they also know that even if ppl stop smoking in public places they are many of them are not gonna quit smoking and therefore it is a win win situation for the, as in the image of the UPA govt which was doomed is rebuilt and the govt is also not missing out in the revenue part of it.....

yes , i agree with u denny,
But a correction,
How the image of UPA govt was rebuilt from doom, because of this!
the INflation and Pay commission destroyed the image of UPA and the Nuclear Deal also failed in the name of sovergnity.
However, i welcome the N deal as we havea enough N-power and so a test is not required. we can directly bomb ourselves.
