    wow! really makes me proud!

Though why are all the great achievments in distant past only. Why went wrong that in between that India is no longer contributing to the world in the same way!

The answer would be quite simple, Socialism and crooked polity!!

After independance the politicians (then Congrss Party and the JP)never addressed the issues on education, population and globalization, rather the politicians believed illetracy and population will keep them ruling forever and ever, and socialist agendas will always be there to woo the poverty struck people!!!

      wdm2a,

I would think of this to be a rather cynical view of the world. The post independence Indian govt under Nehru was working on the Mahanalobis plan (5 year plans) which believed in the state occupying commanding heights of India's economy so as to provide controlled environment in the formative years instead of leaving it in the hands of fickle market forces.

The intention was right but the execution faltered, with trends like license raj coming up as a result of corruption creeping into not just politicians but all levels of bureaucracy. Think of a positive scenario where the state could have executed well and we would have made much more progress... think of China!

I think to blame is also the amount of tolerance that we Indians generally have towards things around us. It really takes a lot to instigate such a change.

With India being much more open to the rest of world now, I hope things changing for the better and corruption becoming harder to pull at the more responsible positions.

That our politician's reservation scam has been delayed so much is also a positive sign in this regard. But that they can still push it (and are actually doing that) makes one think - is India paying too much of a price for democracy!
